March Break with the kiddos was fun, although we are still being dogged by illness. Oh well, it's been a pretty good winter so I can't really complain if we've got a few weeks of the blahs, right? Right! It turns out I did get some sewing time in this week. Woo hoo! Now, did I take advantage of that time to finish a few of my gazillion projects? Heck no! Why finish something when you can start something instead? Daniel was keen to make a placemat for him so we worked together on that and I'll share it next week when it's done.
The other project I worked on is this fun lap quilt. Ever since I saw Ginette's post about the Jelly Roll 1600, I've been itching to try it with solids. I was going to make my own jelly roll, but then I saw the Kona dark jelly roll at a guild meeting a few weeks ago and I couldn't resist.
Kona Solid Jelly Roll - Dark |
I took my time (listening to the Steve Jobs biography -- fascinating!), but still had the top finished within three hours, which includes creating the initial 1600"-ish strip. Three hours for a quilt top that's approx. 56" by 64"! It didn't turn out as I had envisioned, but I still really like it. Very funky modern look, I find. It is bugging me that both yellows are on the same side, but wabi sabi, wabi sabi, wabi sabi! ;)
Here's a photo of the finished top being held up by my seven year old and his buddy. It's a little off, but there's hope yet for them to become my quilt models. Muuaahaaahaa! How do you like our Christmas lights?
I'm linking up to TGIFF!, which is being hosted by the fabulous Rhianon @ The Nifty Stitcher. She's got a gorgeous quilt she made for her sister. Her free motion quilting is seriously awesome! Check it out and you're welcome to link up one of your own recent finishes!
Okay, it's time for the giveaway! Today's giveaway is two batik fat quarters and one long quarter of this fabulous graduated batik that goes from yellow to green to blue-grey. I picked these fabrics up in Digby, Nova Scotia last summer because it reminded me of the ocean there and I thought I'd share some of it with you!
This giveaway is open to everyone until March 23, 2012 at 6 p.m. EST. Ms. Random Number Generator will pick the winner and I'll post it sometime on the 24th. So what to do to win?

My fun thing was to teach both my parents how to use the slow cooker they have had in the kitchen for 18 months
ReplyDeleteFun, what was fun this week? Well, Monday was our weekly volunteer session at the zoo. Four hours of cleaning cages & feeding all the birds in return for petting a couple of owls and a tapir. Tuesday, I had a myelogram & CT scan with contrast. Of my spine. Fun, that wasn't, but on the happier side, and I'm sharing this for the VERY FIRST TIME, it appears that the pain in my back for the LAST FIVE YEARS has a very good reason!!! I have undergone more MRI's than I can count, as well as some very painful injections (why am I even telling this to complete strangers????) over the past five years, but lo & behold, there are complications there that deserve some serious attention!!!! Perhaps I'll finally be able to get something done, instead of just taking powerful drugs with really bad side effects! Can you tell I'm over the roof about that??
ReplyDeleteWed, Thu & Fri were all spent sewing my little heart out for a lady in Maryland who wanted some personalized presents for her niece's children. Blankets, bibs & tooth fairy pillows, all told, 8 items.
Who knows what fun we'll have today?? I think we have scheduled some power washing!!! But I know this, at 4 pm, we're having tacos & margaritas with the neighbors!!!
Thanks for the fun giveaway!!

The fun thing I did this week was get to play with my granddaughter all week. We went to Texas to visit and had such a good time. She is 2 years old.
ReplyDeleteWe finally were able to get outside and cut some trees and work in the yard yesterday. I'm sore today but it was so wonderful after a long winter. Thanks for a chance.
ReplyDeleteehhh fun ... not really in sight, except the blog surfing coffee drinking breaks. I hate cleaning and there is always sooo much cleaning if you move - lectures started again so I had to unearth my "rapt attention face" and my fingers hurt from taking notes. So I really need some fun and yay it's weekend!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance!
Have a nice weekend!
I've recently started geocaching and a friend and I walked round a huge lake yesterday that has about 17 caches. At one point I was lying on my stomach leaning over a bridge, with my arm in a hole underneath, looking for the cache. About 6 people walked by giving me really weird looks as they had seen us about an hour before peeling moss of a tree. I roared with laughter!
ReplyDeleteThis week we had unseasonably warm temperatures and I was able to spend an afternoon out on my deck deconstructing old workshirts for a future scrap quilt. I enjoyed the sunshine and the birds building nests enjoyed the occasional thread that blew their way. Thanks for your giveaway.

I spent a whole day out of bed in my sewing studio getting my scrap basket under control. It was definitely running a-muck and needed attention. Even though Steve bugged me by checking on me what seemed like every few minutes, I am grateful he let me out of bed to do something, I was about to go postal. Now he is letting me be in my recliner in the living room but only allowed up for BR privileges and he watches me like a hawk. Geez, he better never hope he has to be on bed-rest, I will show him no mercy!! Muwahahaha I did go to a quilt show last Saturday and scored some really cool hexie's. Will be posting about them on my blog this week. http://jeannegwin.blogspot.com

You asked at the end of a very fun week! My niece was here for a visit and we drove to Multnomah Falls, went to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, stayed overnight at a fancy old hotel, and went out to dinner. Maybe the best thing we did was treat a sweet homeless kid and his dog to dinner--I loved seeing how happy this small thing made my niece, a charitable soul.
