TGIFF! - Su{Brrr}nova

O Happy Day! Welcome to this week's TGIFF!, where every finish deserves a celebration.

I'm excited to share my finished Su{Brrr}nova! I have to admit that I was starting to wonder if this day would ever come. LOL!

Lee's Supernova QAL has been on my bucket list ever since I started cruising the blogosphere two years ago.

I picked up a fat quarter bundle of Laurie Wisbrun's Brrr! last year from Mad About Patchwork and after patting it for way too long, I thought it might be fun to do a Supernova with the line. I added some white for the background and some additional coordinating fabrics, hoping that this colourway might make the supernova look a little like snowflakes.

Those polar bears were clearly calling out to be the block centres -- they are too cute!

So what's with the name? Well, Supernova + Brrr! = Su{Brrr}nova. The hubster prefers to call it the Coca Cola quilt. He's so funny.

I've been trying out some different battings lately, looking for a thicker, but still quiltable batting -- it's cold here in the winter! I decided to try Quilter's Dream Cotton - Select. I liked that it came in a package so I could keep it thread free. It quilted beautifully. We'll see about the warmth factor. I think I'll get to test it out tonight because it's supposed to snow here -- yeah, crazy, I know.

This baby is quilted with almost 1,000 meters of white Aurifil #2021; I only have one bobbin full left. I did peacock feathers in the snowflakes/stars, double fan thingies in between the snowflakes/stars and wind/water swirls in the border. Although I had to pause frequently, it was excellent physiotherapy for my wrist. LOL!

The binding is the stripe from the Brrr! line. I absolutely love the binding. It reminds me a little of a candy cane or peppermint candy.

  12. I so love that colour combination. I had just painted my studio with that turquoise but ended painting over with much lighter shade. Was not appreciated by everyone in the house! I need to make a quilt to hang up with that fabric. Great quilting too. Yeah we are getting snow here to in NS. Snow fall warning! Yikes!

  22. I've heard "the binding makes the quilt" but rarely see one as effective as yours here. You're right... it does look like a candy cane!

  28. Hello Michèle-Renée,

Your quilt is beautiful, such cheerful colours! I hope it keeps you nice and warm.

I'm linking up for the first time today. I've had to stretch the rules - it's not something I finished this week, but a fortnight ago. I couldn't show it on the blog until it reached its new owner - let's just say a swap quilt isn't finished until it arrives!

    Love from England,
    Muv aka Lizzie Lenard

PS. I'd gladly swap your snow for our wretched rain
