It's Time for a Birthday Giveaway!

Isn't it wonderful that Sew Sisters is doing this huge birthday sale and giveaway in honour of my 40th 29th birthday? ;)

For those of you who are not familiar with Sew Sisters Quilt Shop, it is a Canadian-based quilt store that celebrates all things quilting. They have a large selection of fabric, notions, books, patterns and kits.

Although I haven't ordered from their online shop yet, I had the opportunity to visit their Toronto shop twice this summer (it's so close to the 401, how could I not stop?!), and got to meet Carol and Judy in person. So lovely and such fun! Great service and their fabric and notion selection is fabulous. Also, since I'm on a one-income family budget at the moment, I especially appreciate the prices! The shipping rates are the very reasonable because they believe that you should buy more fabric, not postage.

They are having their birthday biggest sale of the year next week. Everything in the store is 29% off, including the clearance items! Better than cake, don't you think?

    Book recommendation: I don't have a lot of time for reading these days, but one amazing book I read was by Andrew Solomon called Far From the Tree. It is amazing!

    I recently read "The Last Runaway" and "The Girl with a Pearl Earring" both by Tracy Chevalier. I also loved reading "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett, but I suppose none of these are very recent books and everyone has read them by now...

    And wine... Ever since I´m living in Hungary I love almost all wines that origin from there, but those are prolly hard to get over there...

    Books, there are just too many... Don't ask me about new ones though, I always need to wait for translations and 'till they are available 2nd hand, lol.

    I adored Donna Tartt's books (The Secret History & The Little Friend), older but still good; books by Ira Levin and the "Attic series" by Virginia Andrews. Though sometimes I enjoy reading less weird books too, chick-lits are great reads just before going to sleep. :)

    Oh, reading currently a book by a Spanish writer, history & fashion, like it a lot: Maria Duenas, The Time in Between. :)

    Book recommendations are hard- I read mostly non fiction like Drop Dead Healthy by AJ Jacobs which was pretty funny. Have you read The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls? It was good.

    and, who has time for reading! But I got The Nature of Blood, Caryl Phillips from the discard pile at the library, 1997. No chapters and you need to figure who the 'I' is sometimes as it has a couple of main characters but certainly would provoke discussion and a nice wine after would uplifting!

    I recently read "The Life of Pi" and found it to be one of those books you just have someone to discuss it with when you're done because it really sticks with you. It would be a great book club pick. "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho is also another really great pick.

    I just loved "In a Sunburned Country" by Bill Bryson. It's non-fiction by an American, and about Australia. I found it very funny. Don't know if Canadians would feel the same or not. I also enjoyed "These Things Hidden" and "The Wight of Silence" by Heather Gudenkauf.

    I recently finished reading "Shag" by Mark Hordyszynski. A unique story with lots of fibre related references. Mark is the designer of Mirror Ball Dots fabrics by Michael Miller. I really enjoyed it. My all-time fave wine is Nova-7 by Benjamin Bridge. What gorgeous fabrics in the giveaway. My fingers are crossed. Thanks!

    BEYOND BELIEF - Inside Scientology and My Narrow Escape
    I always love books where women/children have overcome oppression and rise to tell about it. I just can't imagine raising children the way these children were raised.

    ESCAPE FROM CAMP 14 - An incredible story of the only person born in a North Korean prison camp to have ever escaped alive and tell about it. This story changed what I thought I knew about North Korea. And to think these camps exist today - NOW.

    Wine:

    OBiKWA - A Shiraz red wine from the Western Cape, Africa. Yummy, but I know nothing about wine.

    If you love long series, I would recommend the books by Diana Gabaldon, starting with Outlander and then keep going. She has a new book coming out this next year, March 2014, so if you read very fast you will have finished the other six 800+page books by then.

    Something quicker: Book of Lost Fragrances by M.J. Rose

    Non-fiction: Creation: How Science is Reinventing Life Itself by Adam Rutherford

    Don't drink but love Earl Grey and cookies when I read.

    I haven't read anything in a while that's felt like a good book to recommend (and I've crapped out part way through a few books, which is unusual for me! I think I'm in some kind of reading down-swing at the moment and nothing's keeping my attention). I went and looked at all the books I've read this year and there's nothing on the list that I'd recommend for a book club, so if I roll all the way back through last year... Half Blood Blues by Esi Edugyan would be my suggestion. But, since probably everyone read that one last year, I'll go further back in time (but still on the subject of the blues) and suggest Coming Through Slaughter by Michael Ondaatje. I haven't read that book in years, but I loved it immensely.

    If this is your 40th 29th birthday does that mean you are 69??? Because if that is the case you are looking damn fine for 69, girl. The Painted Girls by Cathy Marie Buchanan (Cdn to boot) is a great read....Parisian back up ballerinas, you know,the chorus line. Their hard scrabble life and Paris in the 1800's. they were the inspiration for Degas' statues . I then read Paris by Edward Rutherford (?) a fictional story set to real life events through many decades of Parisian history. Sit down with either of these and a cold glass of Sav blanc and you're set for a fine time.

    Hmmm, it's hard sometimes to recommend a book since everyone's preferences/tastes are different. I like forensic sciences, law, mystery, etc. I've recently read "The Wrong Man", "Defending Jacob" both of which were good reads.

    The School of Essential Ingredients by Erica Bauermeister is a title I can highly recommend, M-R. A beautiful story. Not only are the characters well developed, but the descriptions of the food they learn to cook in their monthly cooking classes will leave your mouth watering. ;o)

    I love to sew, but never have enough time, what with work, family and more work because we have our own business. I have no time to read, either, so no books to recommend. My fav wine brand, one I go back to often is Dr Zen Zen They are all good, but my personal pick is the Spatlese as bit on the sweet side.

    A lighter read would be Edenbrooke by Julianne Donaldson or a more heart wrenching one would be Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys (not the dirty popular book - this one's about a Lithuanian family sent to Siberia during WWII).

    Well if you like red wine, I always enjoy either a Tempranillo or a nice Cab/Shiraz blend. As for books, I few I've recently enjoyed are Ghostman by Roger Hobbs, Devil in the White City by Erik Larson, and The Passage by Justin Cronin. Enjoy!

    Would hate to recommend a book that will take you away from quilting but the Outlander series by Diana Gabaladon will do that. Amazing reads... I'm a follower for sure of both the books and Sew Sisters....

    I would recommend any of Louise Penny’s books though am not sure if they are book club fodder. Still, a great read set in a Canadian location by a lovely Canadian writer.

    I love Sew Sisters! Did you know that Judy and I are high school BFFs? True story! Anyway. Books. Our book club just read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. Non-fiction but riveting. Highly recommended. We also read and loved Riel Nason's novel The Town That Drowned (delightful CanCon and by a quilter to boot). The Juliet Stories by Carrie Snyder (also Can Lit) made for some good discussion. Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese was very well-written and generally liked by the club.

    I'm a follower of yours on Bloglovin' and my wine recommendation is a Viognier if you like white wine (Cono Sur from Chile makes a cheap 'n cheerful one) . For reds, I like a nice Cote du Rhone (pretend the accents are there).

    Sorry I can't help out with a book recommendation. Between work, gardening and quilting, I don't read very much in the summer. I can help out with a wine. I am always on the hunt for a $10 great wine. Try Sterling Vineyards Chardonnay. Yummy, peachy, cool and delicious.

    The last book I read was the "The Book of Negros" It was good but heart wrenching! Don David wine right now is our current fav. Dont know if you can get it there or not. I like the Cab Sav.

    I love Robert Jordan's Wheel of time Series of books . there's about 14 in the series, I think and they are all huge. Guaranteed to take a few months to read thru all. Classic good vs evil in a science fiction type of mode. excellant reading. Thanks so much for sharing

    Book, I recommend the book thief, it s supposed to be a youth book, but powerful message makes it worth the read.
    Wine, well I usually hit up vintages and ind something interesting.

    I always recommend "Calculating God" or anything else by Robert Sawyer (He lives in Mississauga) if you have any interest in science fiction.

    Kelley Armstrong is another great local author. Her new book "omens" is the first of a new series.
