Playing with Plum Crazy & Giveaway

My TGIFF bestie, Laura from Quokka Quilts has released her first pattern, Plum Crazy! I'm so excited for her. Yay!

She sent me a copy and I've been playing around with some fabric to see what might look good in this design. I found that this was a pretty easy pattern to select fabric for. Yay! I have purchased a number of fat quarter bundles over the years, which I absolutely love, but I can't bear to break them up. Laura's maximized the use of fat quarters for this project and created a design that showcases the fabrics nicely. Double yay!

First, I pulled fabrics for a fun kids' quilt -- Dr. Seuss. I think I'd use the green solid for the sashing and the stripe for the binding:

There's this bundle of New Zealand fabrics that my sister brought me years ago and that I can't cut up unless I can use most, if not all, of it (yes, silly rule of mine, but there you go). I would go great with a black solid for the sashing and binding:

And this bundle of Bohemian Rhapsody paired with a red solid that I've been holding onto for that "perfect" project:

Which to try first? Decisions! Decisions!

You can see other versions of this quilt on Laura's blog and other bloggy friends will be sharing her pattern and their fabric selections in a pattern hop this week too.

To celebrate, Laura's offering 20% off the pattern this week -- promo code Plum20. She's also offering a giveaway of a PDF of the pattern to my readers. Sweet!

To participate in this giveaway, just leave me a comment, between now and Friday, October 10th at 6 p.m. EST, on what makes you 'plum crazy' when it comes to quilt patterns. Followers of my blog get a bonus entry -- just leave me a comment letting me know how you follow along. 1. I'm crazy about stars; any stars, large or small. But I'm not so crazy about following patterns unless they are saturated with photos.

  8. I love your dr. Seuss combo!! I love when a pattern has lots of photos or drawings. Also love it when they include instructions and fabric requirements for more than one size!

  9. It drives me plum crazy if I find an error in the instructions for a pattern or if I cannot visualize the pattern with fabrics in my collection. I love the NZ fabric collection the best, but they are all great.

  12. I am Plum Crazy about patterns that give clear directions for cutting; that state the sizes of the sections as they're sewn together; that give pressing suggestions (I'm not fond of pressing my seams open); and that show a clear photograph of the finished quilt (too many quilt magazines just show it thrown across a couch). Thanks.

  15. What makes me plum crazy is patterns that are unclear and do not list anywhere the block size.

  16. Really? December 10? Puff, puff, I can't keep up with the way time flies! What makes me plum crazy is the wealth of patterns my mind creates in a 24 hour period and the fact that it takes weeks to make a quilt! And the positive side of plum crazy is that my mind creates countless patterns in any 24 hour period!

  17. It drives me crazy when pattern cutting instructions are wrong, or the piecing could have been much more efficient if done a different way.

  22. I think I'm plum crazy about patterns because I keep collecting them: buying them, tearing them out of magazines, buying books with more patterns and ideas, subscribing to more quilt magazines than I really have time to read, going to quilt shows and taking pictures of quilts which give me ideas of things I'd like to try, etc, etc. And I already have enough patterns and ideas to last a lifetime! If I just sat down and tried out all the ideas and patterns I've already collected, I couldn't possibly get through them all in this life!

  23. As a Kiwi I think that your NZ quilt will be gorgeous, as will all the others! I am plum crazy about patterns like these that can look so different depending on what fabrics are selected.

  25. What drives me plum crazy is using up all of a fabric on one project. I love having enough left over to use again. If I use it all up, I fell like I need to go out and buy more of it, just in case.

  26. you have some difficult choices there m-R...which to do first!!! they are all wonderful. I go plum crazy when a pattern isn't printed just right...maybe a wrong size or cut??? annoying...lol

  27. Looove the Quilt Pattern, and quilt! & also your choices to make more! lol I don't like a pattern without pictures, or at least understandable drawings of steps to do. :)

  39. I go plum crazy if there is an error in the pattern and because of it I don't have enough fabric to recut (true story; been there, done that!) For my two cents worth, I think you should begin with the Dr. Seuss fabrics. Since you posted that one first, I know you want to get going on it!

  41. I go plum crazy when quilt patterns lack pictures and pressing direction instructions. It is not a pretty sight. Sometimes I feel that the pattern writer is reluctant to "share" their expertise in the pressing of their quilt. Thanks for offering a giveaway.
