What the FMQAYGQAL? My Own Adventure

http://www.quokkaquilts.blogspot.comThe last row of the FMQAYGQAL with Laura at Quokka Quilts is Choose Your Own Adventure. Fun!

Before I get to what I did with the last four blocks, here is the border I did with Flame Flower. Very pleased with it!
Back of Flame Flower:

Sun Medallion - I love going to Leah Day's Free Motion Quilting Project site (her button is on my left hand sidebar) to look at quilt designs. This is her Sun Medallion. Okay, it doesn't look a lot like hers because I mucked it up in a few spots, but I think it kind of looks like a flower anyways so we're going with it!
Back of Sun Medallion:
Poinsettia - Also from Leah Day's site. This is one she has in her Advanced section. I did it! And mine actually looks kind of like hers. Love, love, love! I also find it kind of looks like the Truffala trees from The Lorax.
Back of Poinsettia
Sawblades - Also from Leah's site. Getting the c's and u's consistent was tricky, but once again the final effect of this motif is really the space between the stitch lines rather than the stitch lines. Love the texture of this one!
Back of sawblades:
Shark Fins: This is one that Quilt Jane showed on Laura's Choose Your Own Adventure post. It looked like fun and I thought this one would be a good one to try to see if I could get consistent rows of motifs. Not over the moon with my interpretation with this one, but still pretty happy with it.
Back of Shark Fins:

Here's a photo of all the completed blocks on my design wall. I'm playing with the layout and trying to figure out the sashing colour.

White: It would basically look like this:

Black and white stripe:
Black and white swirl:

I guess another alternative is a rainbow stripe. Hmmm, what do you think? I'd love some advice!

Hope you are having a great weekend!

  1. good job on the FMQ, I LOVE Leah Day's designs and have her two books that I even use on my long arm. for your blocks I'd choose the last one, it looks greyish, I'm afraid the black and white stripe, that the stripes would look too funky or what if some are slightly crooked or don't match up, your eye might go to that.

  2. I like the blank and white stripes! Love a little pop! You are doing great with the FMQ designs! I should be quilting along to improve (I am so happy to finally be able to meander correctly!)

  3. Great blocks. I like the simplicity of the white,it lets the blocks shine; however, lately I'm liking the addition of cream with white....it is just enough different to add some depth.

  5. I don't like the black and white stripes because I think it takes the focus away from your blocks. My eye goes to the stripes. I like the white or the swirl because it let's your FMQ be the main focus. Great job on your quilting! It is going to be a beautiful quilt!!

  8. Hmm, i'm still liking white but black and white swirl is also great. Have you tried a solid black/grey? I'm not keen on the stripe to be honest. It distracts from the rest I think. Want to guest post on your joining method next fortnight?

  9. Maybe a solid grey? I love the squares on their own. They look like pantone colour cards. Gorgeous.

  12. I am so impressed. LOVE the free motion variety. I've been wanting to do a quilt-as-you-go project like this to learn/practice some more FMQ stitches ... my FMQ usually just looks all the same. Thanks for the inspiration! I love the colors! Beautiful work!
