Just a Flesh Wound

Warning: This is not for the faint of heart. Drama, drama, drama!

Given how often I wield the vicious instrument known as a rotary cutter, it was bound to happen at some point. Friday afternoon, I sliced my thumb knuckle skin off with my rotary cutter. Sheared it right off. Six stitches later with no guarantee that the cutoff skin will make it, the thumb itself is expected to make a full functional recovery. Yay! That said, I will likely have a crazy scar that will testify to the fact that I have suffered for my craft. I will spare you the visual -- it ain't pretty.

Alas, not only am I suffering physically for my craft, I must now endure endless ribbing from the hubster about how dangerous quilting is. How they will have to study my work BTI (Before Thumb Injury) versus ATI (After Thumb Injury) to see how it will affect my art. How quilting is now considered an extreme sport and we will have to enter it into the X games. How my rotary cutter appears to be sharper than our steak knives. And this is just the beginning, I'm sure...

Oh well, he has to do the dishes and the laundry for the next few days and I'll gladly take a little ridicule over those tasks any day of the week! He he. I'm just so thankful that it wasn't more serious. :)

This incident reminded me of one of the silliest Monty Python scenes I have ever seen. I give you the Black Knight:

I do have something quilty to share with you though. BTI, I finished my Don't Worry {bee} Happy block for Alisha. I hadn't worked with red, aqua and white before. I LOVE it! So crisp and fun. We used this Mod Mosaic tutorial from Oh Fransson! Will definitely be trying this again.

Happy quilting!

  1. Oh my goodness! A quilter's worse nightmare. The injury...not Monty Python! Heal fast MR, so you can get back to sewing! Play the "I can't do housework" card for as long as possible too!

  2. I cut the tip of my left index finger off this summer. OMG. Couldn't stitch it because I sliced it off too well! It is still healing as the nerves regenerate. I now use all sorts of safety equipment when cutting. YOIKS! Hope your thumb heals quickly!

  3. Ouch, I feel your pain! I rotary-cutter-sliced a piece of my left pointer finger off once and it bled like crazy, so much so that I nearly fainted from seeing all that blood! It healed up totally fine though and I'm sure yours will too, just be careful not to re-injure the same spot in the meantime! Good luck!

  5. ouch! that is not fun. Enjoy having some one else do the dishes for awhile!
I like the crispness of that colour scheme, too. Reminds me that I've got one of those blocks started somewhere, must go dig it out and finish that pillow top. Be careful - it is dangerous out there!

  7. I am so sorry about your thumb! But so relieved it wasn't worse! I hope it heals fast!
I have a fat quarter bundle of reds and aquas that is calling my name! I really like your block... you may have inspired me to try something more modern!
My husband says the next Bear Grylls show should be called "Man vs Quilt: extreme cutter edition"! LOL

  8. Oh No!! How awful - poor you! Don't listen to Amy - I'm glad there are no gory pics - I'm very squeamish! I think I'm supposed to say "I hope you didn't get any blood on your quilt/fabric!!..." but that would be very mean - so I won't say it!

Hope you heal soon! Love the colours in that block.

  10. ouch! I can just imagine.... most often accidents happens with dull knifes etc ( though the one time I cut myself with a knife was when I finally had a sharp one- at work at college)
I'm still trying to imagine HOW you managed to cut yourself like that, how are you holding your ruler and cutter?lol- sorry

  11. OUCH. I cut the tip of my pinky off the night my grandbaby was born. They stitched me up, but it's still odd. I take a lot of ribbing about it. I always say my projects aren't complete unless they have a drop of my blood on them, but you're taking it to extremes MR! Hope you heal quickly.

  12. Bahahaha! I know I'll be punished for laughing but I couldn't help myself. Quilting as an extreme sport, Monty Python, YOU made me laugh!!

  13. Oh no! Heal well my friend. My quilting instructor was constantly at us to make sure our rotary cutter was always closed, unless in use. Honestly, it's a wonder I haven't had a cutting injury yet. well, I've cut myself in the kitchen, but not for quilty reasons yet.

  14. Ouch. Been there.

The question on our minds now is, did you bleed on the fabric?

    Feel better.

  15. Yikes! Your story and all these comments are making me very glad I don't use a rotary cutter. As clumsy as I am, I'd be sure to hurt myself.

Hope you heal quickly. And get some safety gloves!

  18. Oh my goodness! I am so sorry to hear this. I have caught my finger nails a few times, thankfully I leave them longer and it has saved my finger tips a number of times. I will try to think of this the next time I am zipping through a charm square swap at the last minute. I hope your thumb heals up fast!

  19. Yikes! At least your thumb will continue to be functional? I giggled at "just a flesh wound." Good ol' Monty Python!

  21. yikes! I hope everything heals uneventfully and you are back in full service soon. Well, maybe except for the dishes and laundry...

  22. OUCH! I can totally relate. My thumb accident was when I told my son he was cutting something wrong and he might cut himself, so let me do it! And I did...I nearly cut my thumb off! I hope you will heal properly. At least you don't have to do dishes for a while!

  23. I am so sorry about your thumb! That hurt to think about it. And I love the video. The theater I'm doing Seussical in will be the first theater in Georgia to host a non-touring production of Spamalot this Spring! If I were 10 years younger (and quite a bit skinnier!) I might audition for the Lady of the Lake. Not sure the hubby would like me kissing someone else though.
I did get your email about hosting TGIFF. I replied twice only to find out later that neither actually got sent. I'm so sorry! Things have been insane here while the musical is going on but should let up next week.
