Back On The Design Wall

Guess what's back on the design wall? Seeing the Forest For The Trees! I made the four other blocks so it's now 16 trees rather than 12 trees.

Here are the new trees:

I also flipped the bottom eight trees so they act more like a reflection of the top trees. I think I'm good with the layout of the trees, but I'm curious where your eyes go when you look at this?

Now I'm playing with the sashing. It might take a bit as this isn't doing it for me right now.

So I tried this....
 And this...
And this...

Getting closer. Any ideas or suggestions are most welcome!

  1. LOVE! So gorgeous M-R! I like the flipped trees so that there is no "this side up"! All the sashing looks amazing with the abundance of Oakshott colour! Now, I REALLY need to get started on mine!

  2. I adore this quilt and should really make one for myself!!

  3. My first impression is to have the second row a reflection of the first and the fourth row a reflection of the third. Maybe even the colors of the tree could be reflected in the background block. Just a thought.
    Really like this a lot.

  4. I love all of your trees, and thank you so much for your great tutorial that I used for our project!!!

  5. Wonderful trees. IMO I'd have them all oriented the same direction.

  6. My eyes land around the middle, but I think it's more for the yellow than for the reflection idea, which I really love by the way!

  7. I really like how you have done this. In the last one my eyes do go more to the middle, because of the yellow and in the sashing.

  8. I don't have any suggestions for you, but I LOVE your tree blocks. I would leave them on the wall for a few days, tweak the sashings/arrangement whenever you feel inspired to do so and when you stop moving things around, you'll have your quilt.

  9. A wonderful project. These look fab in all arrangements. The yellow sashing squares pull my eyes most but once its sewn together the sashing will be smaller and, I think, not stand out so much :)

  10. My eye moves around a lot at first, but then gets "stuck" on the yellow tree in the middle. I think because that block has the lightest valued background of the quilt, and the block above has the darkest value. Also because there is another warm block to it's right and diagonally down and to the right, so my eye shifts to those a bit too. So if you like the eye resting in the center of the quilt, then it works great, but if you'd prefer it to move around more, maybe move the yellow block and the one above it apart from each other?

  11. Funny how the lightness of the yellow draws my eyes in. Beautiful quilt.

  12. The yellow background and brown tree draws my eye.

  13. Love the trees...The reflection is nice.

  14. Looking good M-R! I agree with Debbie however, and would try with the 2nd row reflecting the first and the 4th reflecting the 3rd. Just a thought! I think I would leave them on the design wall for a few days and play with the layout until it looks just right! Can't wait to see it done!

  15. I love your trees! Like others said, my eyes go to the yellow in the second row. There are endless possibilities for the lay out, so keep playing until you're satisfied! I am looking forward to see the quilting on this one!

  16. I think I like the second sashing best. No real reason why. I actually had to look to even find the differences between it and the others, but it feels more restful to me for whatever reason. And my eye goes to the yellow/gold backed trees in the middle.

  17. This is a going to be stunning! But darn, I had chosen that very name for a quilt idea I had. My eyes definitely focus on the yellow.

  18. I like the reflective setup. As for the sashing, I like #2.

  19. Love those four new blocks, M-R. This quilt is gorgeous and it's so interesting seeing your progress. I like the last layout for it's contrast.

My eye goes to the middle of your quilt landing on the yellow/gold background and then moves on a diagonal to the right to land on the red/wine background.
    (hope that helps? lol)

  20. I didn't think reflections, I immediately thought roots. Very cool and unexpected setting.

  21. Love those trees, they're gorgeous!!!
Do you use a "stack & slash" method?

    BLM :)

  22. This is going to be really cool!!!

P.S. I would change the sashing to black with the coloured "cornerstones".

  23. Love the trees... Very special design. Think I likes the last setting best, but let it stay on wall for some days and let it grow....

  24. First off, any and all are F off fantastic! I am mesmerized and job well done! Have you tried converting your photos to B&W and that will help you see the value placement better and determine if it is equally distributed? I think you should leave all that intense colour in there, it brings joy to my heart!

  25. Love the trees, loved the talk last night at the Richmond Guild. So glad that you also brought Laura along, because I now belong to the Ottawa Modern Quilt Guild!

  26. To tell the truth, I'm so sucked in by those beautiful trees that I didn't even notice that the sashing in each photo was different until you mentioned it… Now, having studied them a bit, I like it when the colours of the sashing next to each block is similar to the block itself, almost like an overlap or colour bleed and makes the whole quilt seem slightly more unified.
