Put A Pin In It

I'm finally starting to kick this cold's butt to the curb. Good riddance! Funnily enough, it coincided with finishing the binding on Scrap{Bee} 2.0. ;) I'll share it next week once I've taken some good photos of it.

Our OMQG swap this month is a pincushion, maximum size 6" square. I made this one for my friend Jan from The Pickle Dish.

I was trying to channel some Zakka. I used Essex Linen (natural?), some aqua fabric I had in my stash and Little Matroyshka by Carly Griffith for Riley Blake that I found in Jan's shop. I'm very happy with how the pincushion turned out. So much so that I will just have to make another one for me. :)

Edited to add: The pincushion is filled with crushed walnut shells. I bought them at Pet Smart and they look like this. You can fill a pincushion with all sorts of things, but I like the weight and shape that the walnut shells give it. Walnut shells are allergenic, I'm told, so you need to make sure that the person using it doesn't have allergies.

So here's a question for you. If you are supposed to include some coins in a wallet or purse that you are gifting someone for good luck, should you gift a pincushion with a couple of pins in it for the same reason? Inquiring minds want to know!

Have a great weekend everyone!

  1. I see the Zakka channel. It would be even pretier if you would add a bit of hand stitching which is always nice personal touch :) Pins for luck? hmm, not sure about that. Maybe one of those long pins whith a little charm glued on top.

  2. I think sticking a couple pins in before mailing it off sounds like a fun idea :) if I were on the receiving end, I would add them to my pin box and enjoy the reminder of where they came from each time I used them {which perhaps is not as often as I should, if my misaligned seams are any indication ;) } I've never had any pins with fancy charms on top, and I always wonder when I see them if they are usable or just for decoration

    1. Hi Colleen, you are a no reply blogger so I hope you come back to see this answer. I've updated the post to include the fill. I use crushed or ground walnut shells for my pincushions. Thanks so much for asking!

      Cheers,

  5. It turned out so sweet! I usually include some little extra in the package, so I think pins are a good idea. Chocolate is also good ;-)

  6. Love your cushion. I have made a few cushions and I add 3 quilting pins (the long ones) to each one. I try to coordinate the colour of the pin head with the design on front. Hope your friend enjoys it. Do you fill yours with crushed walnut shells?

  9. this is adorable. I use crushed walnut shells too. And when I gave pin cushions as gifts lately, I have given a box of pins with them! Just seemed right and made a nice little gift.

  10. The pin cushion is adorable. I think you should string (or glue) a few beads onto a pin, or two and put them into the cushion. It would add a little sparkle. Mind you, this cushion is perfect as is, so the choice is yours.

  11. This is a beautiful pin cushion. I remember reading (long ago) something or other - possibly by Elizabeth Gaskell - where pins were offered as change for a purchase so they were a sort of currency in which case pins in a cushion would certainly be like coins in purse. I did try to google it quickly but pinterest has taken over the word 'pin' to such an extent you can't find out anything about real pins now!
