Making Progress - Layers of Leaves

I'm sure you've probably heard the news of the events here in Ottawa on Wednesday. It was a rough day to say the least. Our hearts are broken for Cpl. Nathan Cirillo and his family. So very sad! Many Ottawans, yours truly included, were in buildings on lockdown for most of the day. It was scary, but we're okay. I'm so proud of how our military, police and Parliament security reacted to and handled the situation. We're trying to get back to normal today, though with Cpl. Cirillo's sacrifice front and centre.

As always, quilting is my therapy for stressful situations so I was pretty happy to spend Wednesday evening sharing my quilts with the Arnprior District Quilter's Guild. What a great group!

I have also made good progress with my Layers of Leaves piece. Here are a few photos of some of the design choices I've been considering tonight.

1) Go dark at the bottom?

2) Try some green?

3) Green and dark grey?

4) Green and brown?

5) Finish with the same grey as the top?

6) Finish with a slightly darker grey than the top?

What do you think?

  1. Glad you had a quilting group to go to after that stressful day. I am partial to number 5... but any one would be a great start. I am sure the answer will be obvious after looking at it for a while.

  2. I, too, vote for 5. Flying flags at school at half mast and thinking how Canada pulls together, as evidenced in our Parliament today.

  3. I kind of like the third one - the green is a nice addition and I don't really love it with the big expanse of grey at the bottom. But it's your quilt, so the thing that speaks to you... :D

  5. I like the green with the dark grey, but they are all very effective! Yesterdays events are an eye opener for us all, but we Canadians are strong. My heart's breaking for Cpl Cirillo's family

  6. I am partial to 5 and 6 for different reasons. Five evoked a feeling of airiness and six was a feeling of solidness. I found the other colours distracting. Cannot wit to see how you finish it.

  7. I like 6; the darker grey anchors the whole. 5 is floating. I don't like the introduction of other colours; I find they change the balance too much. Either way, 5 or 6, it's brilliant. (I just read Heather's post above: I agree completely, so it all depends on the effect you want to create!)

  8. #5 is my choice. But I'm a little (okay...a lot) partial to orange. I'm so glad that you are safe. I have family in Ottawa, and it was so relieving to hear that everyone was safe.

  9. We've been thinking about our Canadian friends over here in Australia, so please stay alert! (but not alarmed!) As per the quilt, agreed that the other colours are distracting. I'd also concentrate on only using cool greys so that they contrast agains the warm tones of the leaves.

  10. #6
I like the way you feel movement from top to bottom and back again. The added colours just makes it stop...then you almost have to re focus to move on

  11. I like the addition of the green and dark brown to ground it.

Ottawa is a city that feels like a small town, and it's shocking to realize that this could happen there - or in my hometown.

  13. I like it with something dark at the bottom; draws the eye down. It's very pretty so far.

  14. Thank you for visiting our Guild on Wednesday evening. You inspired me to focus on my own quilting ie. quilt at least 30 minutes per day and to make some of my quilts have a modern flair. I loved seeing your creations and meeting you! Take care!
