Kicking off 2017 with a Party -- A Slab Block Linky Party That Is!

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you were able to get a little 'you time' after the hustle and bustle of the holidays. I, for one, was really looking forward to slamming the door on 2016 and greeting 2017 with wide open arms. One of the ways I'll be trying to make 2017 better is by participating in Canada's Big Quilt Bee with the Canadian Quilter's Association (CQA) and Fabric Please!

Check out my last post for more details, but in a nutshell, CQA is looking for 12.5" slab blocks with some Canada 150 fabric to make 1,000 quilts for kids at Ronald McDonald House.

Slab blocks are really easy to make and you can find the instructions on the Canadian Quilters Association site (thank you to Cheryl Arkinson for providing them!).

Fabric Please!, in addition to carrying the Glowing Hearts Canada 150 fabric, has offered up some prizes for people who donate slab blocks to the project. Woo hoo!

Before I go, I thought I share a few photos I was able to get this weekend. With the gorgeous weather we had, I 'made' the boys take me to the Tulip Festival this weekend for Mother's Day. It's Time for a Birthday Giveaway!

Yes, those are gardening gloves beside the fat quarters and they are awesome for free motion quilting. A tip from a friend had me trying out a pair of these Gardena gloves on the quilting of Hard Core. Love, love, love these gloves! They fit snugly without getting too hot. The rubber on the palm gives me more grip so there's less strain on my fingers to hold the fabric. They did smell of rubber for the first couple of days out of the package, but they are fine now. Since this is one of my new favourite tools, I'm going to go all mini Oprah on you and share a pair with one of you, in addition to those fat quarters.

My Memories Giveaway

I have a giveaway for you today! Nice way to kick off the weekend, eh? The nice folks at My Memories asked me to review and give away a copy of their software. Sure! I've seen it on a few other bloggers' sites and was curious to try it.

Using this software, you can create digital scrapbooks, photobooks, cards, calendars and gifts without having to buy expensive and complicated software programs. Thumbs up! My Memories Suite is also rated #1 by Amazon and TopTen Reviews.

I used to do scrapbooking by hand until I discovered photo books with Shutterfly. Since then my scrapbooking materials have largely made their way into the kids craft space. LOL! The online photo books programs have their limits though.

I was curious what a scrapbooking software program could do and whether it could do more of the stuff I like to do with my blog, like buttons, headers, etc. The first thing I tried was my Scrap Bin Mission button above. It was easy and straightforward to create and insert the picture. Thumbs up! I couldn't figure out how to change the size small enough for my blog though so I finally exported it and cut it to size in Gimp. I can't fault the software for this though, as I'm still a newbie at it.

Next up, I thought I'd try some scrapbook page layouts. I don't share many photos of my kids online for privacy reasons, so I put in some pictures of my quilts for this review. There are a lot of great page designs that could be used for photos with the kids though.

I had fun making these pages...great layout designs, eh? There are plenty of really nice free ones included in the software, but you can also buy supplemental designs. A funky Frank Lloyd Wright-ish/Mondrian-ish design, available in four palettes...

An Accounts-style page -- couldn't you just imagine photos of quilts made with Architextures on this page?

You can add text and embellishments, change colours, add photos to the layouts -- and I'm sure I barely scratched the surface. 

Before I started my blog, I used to keep a journal of my quilts with information about the size, materials, techniques, etc. I could definitely see using this software for this too -- and it would be much prettier than my printer paper!

Back in Action Giveaway!

We had a wonderful vacation in St. Andrew's-by-the-Sea, New Brunswick with my husband's extended family. Beachcombing, playing cards, going to town on chocolate during Chocolate Fest (I never thought I'd hear my kids say, "I ate too much chocolate!"), swimming, geocaching, hiking, and whale watching -- so much fun! I decided to stick with the sea glass idea, but used cyan and dark teal with black. I'm liking it, but I'm also wondering what it would look like if the teal was the more dominant colour -- I'm a dark colour kind of girl. I may have to try that sometime.

Nothing funny this week, what with all the ill but tomorrow we're hiring a bouncy castle for my son's birthday and I know that will be hilarious!! :)
