Works in Progress Wednesday - The Get in Gear Edition

We've all got a hacking cough and the hubster is still sick so I've got nothing especially upbeat to say today. :( Since I'm not blowing much sunshine today, I have to share with you this funny post about this time of year. I can relate to this mom's experience. I imagine that a number of you can as well. :)

Oooh, I'm participating in the Stamp On It blog hop with the Sew We Quilt gang. My day is July 1st...Canada Day! Muahahaaa!

New/Completed Projects:

Hard Core: I'm hosting TGIFF! this week, where I'll be sharing Hard Core. If you have a recent finish, come link up!

End of Year Gifts: The kids have a week of school left. Gulp! I took most of yesterday to make some teachers' gifts using Ayumi Mills' fabulous lunch bag tutorial. I wasn't going to do lunch bags this year, but the kids were ready with colour requests for their teachers so who am I to deny them? ;) Two lunch bags down, two to go. I'm having a hard time parting with these.

Wee SpyDone and blogged.

  7. I'm not a new mom; I'm an old one. My kids are 28 and 32 and the 28-year-old is back in school on his own ticket. What's a homework folder? My kids had homework. Sometimes I helped them. I edited essays. I taught them to *READ* the math problem WORD FOR WORD so they could figure out the answer. I reminded them that Canadians spell differently than Americans.

They made it through. Sometimes there were scholarships. I took photos and cheered and boasted. I still do. I never made a 'thank the teacher' gift. I may have thanked a teacher in person from time to time but gifts were not expected at the time. Yes...and dinosaurs were still roaming the earth.

You aren't a bad parent if you don't sign off your kids' homework folder. Homework is your kids' job while they are in school and they need to learn that in the Real World they will be expected to work because it's the right thing to do; not because anyone will give them gold stars or hugs or effusive praise. They need to learn that accountability is done because its the right thing to do, not because its rewarded. They also need to know they are good people even if they aren't at the head of the class or tops in sports or sexy/cute. They are worthy -- and so are you.

My DD has an M.Ed in Special Ed and works with challenged kids. My son has a BFA (Dramatic Arts) and is working on his Diploma in Digital Media and IT. They don't live with me. They pay their own bills. They give to worthy causes. They have good friends. They see me and call me and hug me from time to time.

    It's all worth it.

  8. Thank you thank you thank you for that link to the end of year blog! I laughed and laughed. It sure is that time of year - endless things coming home from school, endless parties and things to keep track of. And thanks to Margaret (comment 8) for the perspective and encouragement. I'm glad I stopped in for a look here today!

  9. Oops - meant to add that those bags are fantastic!

  10. I love those lunch bags, but agree with Margaret. Teachers get a wage and I don't see why parents are now required to supply gifts! And yes, I do know that some teachers spend extra time that they don't get paid for and pay for some supplies themselves...

I have twenty 'trips' blocks waiting to be sewing together and love the way you have done your blocks!
