March Break Mischief and Mayhem - Works in Progress

We're sticking close to home this March Break. There are so many great things to do around Ottawa that I'm sure we'll have plenty of things to keep us occupied. I'm currently in a 40 Organizing Projects/Items in 40 Days kick so I'm roping the kids in during the break. Friday was their rooms, Monday was the basement, and today is the craft room. Aren't I the most fun mom, ever? ;)

Novelty Fabric Bundles
As I was cutting and organizing my novelty fabrics into Wee Spy quilt bundles over the weekend (organizing project #5), son #2 turned his puppy dog eyes on me full force and told me he wanted to make a quilt with me. His mom is a sucker for those puppy dog eyes so we made this.

He picked out and arranged all the squares. He also worked the pedal and we worked together to guide the fabric through the machine. He soon announced that "Sewing is fun!" and suggested that he get his own machine. I told him we could set up my old machine for him to use and he set off to find it.

In unearthing the old machine, he managed to step on my Bernina extension table and break it clean in half. Sigh. Yes, I'm still crying a little on the inside. :( Anyone have any tips for fixing one? I can't remember if there's a warranty, but there probably isn't.

Anyways, we basted his quilt last night before bed. "Are we going to finish my quilt tomorrow?" was the last thing he asked me last night. He's upstairs waiting for me right now too. "Mommy!" Like a dog with a bone, that one. No idea where he gets it. ;)

Doesn't everyone have a basting party during March Break?
Have a great Wednesday, all!

  2. Well, I have had kids sit on my rulers and bust them ( they used them for taking measurements in role playing games) but yours is a bigger loss..When my son was about 4 or 5, he stacked 5 of my oatmeal bowls on his head, shouted, Hey, Mom! Look at me! I proceeded to yelp, the bowls fell and a few hundred dollars later (the pattern was now out of production..sigh...) we had bowls again..Is your extension table plexiglass? In the sign business (where I grew up) my dad used chloroform in a syringe to build showcases, signs, fixing fridges for customers, etc with acrylics. You could try a window shop or sign shop and see if they could help or I can give you details on the procedure if you are interested in trying yourself. And if you are worried about chloroform being hazardous, my Dad is a very healthy 81, almost 82..lol

  4. Looks like you two were having a lot of fun! I have a son who has also shown more interest in quilting than my daughter. So far... Your collaboration has resulted in a very sweet quilt. Hope you too can get it all quilted up today. It's snowing again!

  5. Aw, what a cutie! I know full well the power of the puppy dog eyes. ;o) Good for you to dive right in making a snuggle worthy project (and memory with your son). Guess I know what you'll be doing today if those puppy dog eyes catch you. ;o) Happy quilting!

  6. so maybe this is a definition of mixed blessings -- a kid excited about making something, and a broken table. I cleaned out my I spy box on the weekend and cut my fabrics to size -- and it looks like I have some of the same prints!

  8. M-R, if you can't find some glue to fix your extension table, maybe you can contact Canus Plastics (http://canusplastics.com) to see if they can repair it for you. Have a great March break.

  10. How wonderful - a quilter's apprentice!

I suggest investigating a heavy duty adhesive for your extension table. I hope you can fix it.

  11. You may also need to add a brace under where you rejoin the table, and I suggest some kind of stick on vinyl over the whole surface to get a good working surface. Maybe you just need to buy a new one. But in the end you know that your son will always remember the quilt you two made together.

  12. Awwww... the plexiglass table will be repaired/replaced/forgotten... but and the quilt will stay, and so will the fond memories of you and your boy sewing with you. a small loss, a big win. Cheers!

  13. I'm sorry about your broken extension table. I have two (adult) brown eyed children and now three huge brown-eye grandsons all with long eyelashes. They can all look at me and I melt. You are a great mom to have patience to sew with him. BTW- I found you via Jan at Sew and Sow Farm - she say "HEY!"

  14. So sorry about your table.
I hope you got the quilt quilted yesterday. My girls have been in my sewing room this week too. We are hoping to finish their projects before school on Monday. Your son must be so proud! It's amazing how quickly they learn and how much they enjoy making projects for themselves!

  15. What a wonderful job he did on the quilt. He might not have done as well with your sewing table but I'm glad you were crying "on the inside" and still encouraging him. Hopefully the table can be fixed.

  16. I am glad someone else keeps things on the floor... (I imagine he didn't step on your extension table on a shelf in the cupboard :P) ;)
Looks like fun :) love the finished product too!!!
