Snowflakes, Snowflakes Everywhere

Happy New Year, all! I was hoping to be back yesterday, but Mother Nature had other plans and the kids got an extra day of Christmas break. More ice than snow this time, but I made a snowflake block so that's today theme. This is the December block for Sheila in my Simply Solids Carmine group. I absolutely adore this block, but it isn't for the faint of heart. There was much unsewing. I left the extra so Sheila can trim it to fit with the other blocks. The tutorial can be found on Mad Quilter's Disease.

This was made with Kona Cerise, Red, Flame, Orange, Kumquat and Papaya. And you know how I know that? 'Cause I got a Kona colour card for Christmas. It's just so purdy.

Speaking of Kona, the Wake Up to Kona Blog Hop begins today. Here is the fun line-up of participants:

Snow Day for Works in Progress Wednesday

It was the first snow day of the year here yesterday. The kids were outside at 8 a.m. building forts and planning their epic snowball fight. How is it that getting them ready for the bus at 8:45 is a battle, but they can be dressed out the door by 8 when there's snow?! I had plans to do a WIP post yesterday, but alas the snow was calling. We all slept very well last night!

New Projects:

Yes, two new projects!

Baby Quilt: One of my cousins (I have a lot of cousins :) ) is expecting her first in February. Her requests were 1) grey, aqua, white and 2) elephants. The grey background is looking a little dark so I think I may change it to Kona Ash. I ordered some elephants on chevrons for the backing from Spoonflower. This is the first time I've used Spoonflower so I'm keen to see how it goes.

Improv Chevrons: I've also started a commission for a friend. Machine appliquéd kids' hands on white and black and white prints on one side for a favourite teacher. Funky chevrons on the other side in greys and black.

Completed Projects:

Simply Solids Bee

The November Bee block for is for Carla. I really liked this Circle of Squares block (tutorial) - looks difficult, but very easy to do (strip piecing)!

Current Projects:

Scrappy Trip Along: Lots of progress; some more blocks here and the rest of the blocks are done. Here is some more colour palette fun. Now to put it all together...

Modern Block Monday - Confetti

Happy Monday! Pam chose this fabulous Confetti block (inspired by Megan’s Party of Twelve quilt from Block Party — The Modern Quilting Bee) for October for my Simply Solids Carmine group and provided a tutorial on her blog. Confetti was so much fun! I'll definitely be doing this one again for my Modern Block Sampler.

The colours are off in the photo -- it was raining and my camera was being temperamental -- I'd get the aqua right in one photo, but then the solid scraps would be too dark. Then I'd get some of the solid scraps right and the aqua would be washed out. My poor camera's is on its last legs.

Works In Progress Wednesday - The Back To School Edition

Do you hear that? That is the sound of silence. My youngest started school yesterday. It was hard on him and it was hard on his Mama. He said his favourite part of the day was the bus ride. Sigh. He was smiling when he got off the bus though and he didn't fight going to school today so we're hoping for a better day today.

I thought I'd be way more, "Woo hoo! I've got 6.5 blessed hours of free time!" because I've been thinking about this time since oh, January. LOL! Quilting time. Shower time. Cleaning reading time. Whatever time. Yesterday flew by though, spent catching up on a lot of things I'd ignored over the summer, and it was 3:10 p.m. when I looked up! Ridiculous!

So where are we on the mega WIP list after a summer of sporadic quilting?

Completed Projects:

All Things Equal: Completed, blogged and gifted!

Happy Canada, Eh!: My entry into the Stamp On It blog hop. Though it's meant to celebrate Canada Day, it is still gracing my kitchen. I'm not sure it will ever come down. I do so love this quilt. :)

Hard Core: Hard Core is done and blogged about here.

Scrap{Bee} Quilt: It's back on the design wall. I'd like to finish up the two or three remaining blocks and finish the top this week.
